Breath, Movement and Voice Class Syllabus

1st Week: Introduction to sensing the movement of breath.
Stretching with the breath. Circling on the stool.
Initial exploration of vowel-space: “A,” “I,” and “U.” (ah, ee, oo)
Spinal roll.

2nd Week: Refining our sensing of the movement of breath.
Finding the center of gravity: on the stool, then on our feet.
Circling with the whole body. Moving from the center.
Exploring the vowels: “O,” and “E” (oh, aye).
“Sending” vowels to one another.
Introduction of the use of the hands with the breath.
Review of “I” and “O.” Introduction of vowel-combinations.

3rd Week: Sensing the movement of breath in the whole body.
Stimulating the breath with movement.
Introduction of movement which arises FROM the breath.
Work with vowel combinations: “U-I,” “O-I,” “U-E.”
Beginning of the exploration of consonants: F, B, P, K, T, D.
Simple syllables with one vowel and one consonant: FA, FU, FEE, FO, etc.

4th Week: Movement and sound arises from the breath.
In this final week, we will combine simple movements with the sounds we have been exploring thus far. We will explore walking and speaking simple syllables; then walking and saying actual words; then walking and telling a story.

Finally, we will walk, talk and gesture, always with an awareness of the movment of breath in our bodies and the ways in which fullness of breath can help overcome fatigue, stress, stage-fright and simple nervousness.
